SCROLL

HOW TO USE the exercise helper

In order to use the exercise helper, the user will submit to the program a video of them doing a bicep curl. The program will process the video and monitor the user's posture during the bicep curl. The program will then output an accuracy score. The closer the accuracy score is to 100%, the better your posture is!

HOW IT WORKS

Working out with improper form can lead to potentially serious injuries. When performing a bicep curl, having your elbows be too far out instead of at your sides can cause damage to your back, neck, and shoulders. In addition, arching your back can cause damage to your spine and its surrounding nerves.

The Exercise Helper uses a neural network to track pivotal (pun intended!) points on the body, most especially the shoulder and elbow joints. It then calculates the angle between the user's arm and the y-axis of the image. If the user's arm swings back or arches forward while performing the bicep curl, this angle becomes larger. The accuracy score compares the user's posture to the correct bicep curl posture (straight up).
